80 South St, Morristown, NJ 07960

To visit Lokl Café is to be enfolded in the center of Morristown’s friendly locals, both young and old, human and four-legged, who all make sure to stop into this coffee shop for a beverage and a little treat. Though it was an overcast and rainy morning when we visited, Lokl Café was bright and bustling, lit by eclectic chandeliers and full of color. There’s even a bicycle hung on the wall!

Founded by two friends who wanted to bring a taste of European cafés to America, Lokl Café provides a diverse coffee menu and assortment of baked goods and sandwiches with a subtle Greek influence. Located just a few blocks from the Morristown Green, Lokl is accessible by public transit (a seven minute walk from the Morristown train stop). It’s also just a short drive off I-287, with metered parking usually available on South Street, and additional parking available on side streets and in a nearby parking garage.

Even though Lokl was busy when we arrived, we were able to settle at a table. Our order was delivered at the counter and even with food, pens, notebooks, tablets and laptops we had plenty of space to spread out, which was really nice. In addition to the three-seater tables that we sat at, the café also has a couple armchairs in the back, a long table with chairs in the front, bar stools along the window looking out onto South Street, and plenty of outdoor tables and chairs on the sidewalk. By the time we left, the coffee shop was pretty full with only a few seats still open. There were plenty of people doing work on their laptops and even reading—so you’d be in good company should you choose to bring your latest book! There were some outlets throughout the café, but not at every seating area, so be aware that you may need to come with a full charge.

In terms of food, the café is slightly pricier than other coffee shops (rated $$) and our experience on the quality was a slight miss. I ordered an espresso and a chocolate orange scone—the espresso tasted weak, as if it wasn’t made with fresh coffee grounds, which was a little disappointing. AJ ordered a hot coffee and a blackberry scone. We both agreed the scones were dry and lacking in flavor. If I visited again, I’d definitely try a different menu item.

Though we weren’t completely satisfied with the coffee and food, we can’t deny that Lokl has a great ambience. It’s just busy enough to feel like you’re part of the hub, but quiet enough (note: there was no music playing, which was refreshing) that you can focus on your reading, writing, or conversations. We stayed for a fairly long time! We’d definitely consider returning to this comfortable space and giving the food a second chance. Overall, NJ Writers Café rates Lokl Café a 4/5.

Until next time, keep your pencils sharp and your creativity sharper!
